Hydrofoil lessons on Zanzibar

hydrofoil lessons zanzibar

DATE

Hydrofoil lesson Zanzibar: 90-min IKO sessions in Paje lagoon, short-mast progression. First flight session 2-3, upwind by session 7. Book your foil week.

Your first hydrofoil lesson is the moment you find out what flying feels like (updated May 2026). The board lifts. The water silences. You ride above the chop, smooth, fast, slightly terrified. That’s how every foiler describes their first session. We’ve taught thousands of these first flights in the Paje lagoon – the most forgiving foil classroom we’ve ever worked in. This is everything you need to know about hydrofoil lessons at Kite Centre Zanzibar.

⏱️ Reading time: 4 min

Key takeaways

  • Prerequisite. Solid Level 3K-4K twin-tip riding. Water-start, upwind, self-rescue.
  • First flight. Typically session 2 or 3.
  • Controlled riding. By session 5.
  • Upwind on foil. Around session 7.
  • Equipment. Short-mast (40-55 cm) for the first 1-2 sessions, then full mast (75-90 cm).
  • Sessions are 90 minutes. 1:1 instructor for the first two, group format after that.
  • Best season. Both Kusi and Kaskazi work; light-wind Kaskazi days are foil-ideal.

What is a hydrofoil lesson?

A hydrofoil lesson teaches you to ride a foil board – a kite board with an underwater wing on a mast underneath. When you reach about 8 knots of board speed, the foil generates lift, the hull leaves the water, and you fly 50-70 cm above the surface.

The kite technique is mostly the same as twin-tip. The board technique is completely new. You’ll be re-learning balance, weight distribution, and how to control lift with your front foot. Most students describe it as “harder than expected the first hour, easier than expected by session three”.

Why learn hydrofoil in Paje?

The same reasons Paje is great for twin-tip – but more so for foil:

1. Flat, shallow water. Falls don’t drift you downwind. You stand up, recover, restart. 2. Light wind works. The foil flies at 12-14 knots when twin-tip needs 16+. Marginal Kaskazi days are foil days. 3. Wide open lagoon. You move fast on foil. You need room. Paje gives you a kilometre of clear water.

See the seasonal breakdown in our wind conditions guide for what to expect by month.

When are you ready for a hydrofoil lesson?

Honest minimum:

  • Confident twin-tip water-start
  • Upwind riding in both directions
  • Self-rescue solid
  • Comfortable handling 15+ knots

Roughly: end of a 10-12 hour beginner course. We don’t recommend hydrofoil as a first discipline because the kite skills you build on a twin-tip are foundational. See our lesson catalogue for the full beginner progression.

For experienced kiters joining specifically for foil sessions, you’re ready out of the box.

What does a typical hydrofoil lesson look like?

Standard 90-minute session:

  • Beach brief (10 min). Equipment intro, fall safety (the foil has sharp edges – we cover positioning), body position on foil.
  • Water work (60-70 min). First sessions are on a short-mast setup. You’ll work on getting the foil to lift and bringing it back down. Lift, sink. Lift, sink. Short flights of 2-5 seconds.
  • Beach debrief (10-15 min). Review what worked, what didn’t, plan for next session.

By session 3 or 4 we switch to the full mast (75-90 cm). The flights get longer. By session 5 you’re chaining flights into controlled riding.

What hydrofoil equipment do we use?

  • Short-mast (sessions 1-2). 40-55 cm masts. Low-impact landings, builds confidence.
  • Full mast (session 3+). 75-90 cm. Real foil performance.
  • Wings. Beginner wings have more lift at slow speed, less top-end. Mid-aspect ratio for fast progression.
  • Kites. 12 m and 14 m for Kaskazi (December-March). 8 m and 10 m for Kusi (June-September).
  • Safety gear. Helmet and impact vest are mandatory. Wetsuit top on request.

All included in the lesson package. Bring boardshorts and sunblock.

How long until you’re foiling independently?

Average progression timeline:

  • Session 1. Foil control on short mast – lift, bring down, repeat
  • Session 2-3. First proper flight (5-10 seconds), board control improving
  • Session 4-5. Controlled riding in straight line, switching from short to full mast
  • Session 6-7. Riding upwind in both directions, transitions

Some students hit this in 5 sessions. Some take 10. Both are normal. We don’t push the timeline. Pole Pole.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do a single hydrofoil lesson on a kite trip?

Yes, but you won’t reach independent riding from one session. A single hydrofoil lesson is great to “try foil” but plan 3+ sessions to actually progress.

How dangerous is a hydrofoil lesson?

Lower than you’d think with proper coaching. The short-mast progression eliminates most fall-from-height crashes. The full mast comes only when you can control the foil. Sharp foil edges are real but the risk is managed with technique and safety gear.

Hydrofoil or wing foil – which should I learn?

Different paths. Wing foil is the more beginner-friendly entry to foiling because you hold the wing in your hands (no lines). Kite hydrofoil is more powerful and connects to your existing kite skills. Many of our students do both. See our complete hydrofoil program for the comparison.
