Are you tired of all the crowds that gather at all the good surfing spots? We have news for you: when you come to surf in Zanzibar, you will most likely share the waves with a maximum of 10 people! Uncrowded waves and even the possibility to get barreled (for the very experienced surfers among us)!
Zanzibar is a true wave-riding paradise with a reef break that’s hugging the east side of the island. When you choose to surf in Zanzibar, you will have plenty of options to choose from. We have great spots a bit north of us, in the village of Dongwe. Right in front of our school, we have a spot in Paje, and a little south of us, there are some spots in front of Jambiani.
To reach these waves, you will need a boat, and an experienced guide to bring you there. Luckily, we know just the right people to sort you out.
Meet Aquaholics Zanzibar, our go-to guys (and girls) whenever we want to go for a surf in the best spots that Zanzibar has to offer! They offer multiple packages which we will list down below.
All beginner lessons are located in Dongwe, just outside of the village. This spot on the inside of the reef has small waves, even when the waves are big on the outside reef. this makes it a perfect spot for beginners, as it provides a safe learning environment. Even if you are a bit experienced, this spot can still be a lot of fun on the foam boards, because the waves are long and great to catch long rides.
This is for the people who would like to do more than just surfing alone. The Dongwe Doughnuts trip consists of three activities, which we will explain below. All the activities will be done in front of Dongwe, in the same spot as the beginner surf courses.
First, you start by taking the boat to the deep channels that are in the reef. This is the perfect spot to try the underwater wing. You will get suited up with a diving mask, and once you’re ready you’ll get towed behind the boat. The underwater wing makes it possible to dive deep, or surface quickly and jump like a dolphin! After the wing, the next activity is snorkeling in the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is considered to be the best snorkeling spot on the Southeast Coast of Zanzibar, so definitely a must when you’re here! After the snorkeling, you will make your way back to the reef, where the surfing begins! The spot is called Dongwe Doughnuts, and it is a perfect mix of waves for more experienced riders on the outside of the reef, and on the inside, there are perfect waves for beginners and first-timers.
